Frequently Asked Questions

A house energy rating assesses the thermal performance (comfort) on a scale of zero to 10 stars. The positioning of the house, the orientation of the windows, construction method and climate zone significantly determine your house star level.

Consumption of energy from household appliances (washing machines, ovens etc.), lighting, taps and shower fittings, and hot water systems do not form part of the star rating as these are items that are not fixed and are replaced several times during the life of the house.

An Energy Rating is required under the National Construction Code (NCC) as part of the planning and building licence submission to your local council.

Yes an Energy Assessment must be completed for any new addition or alteration to an existing home as these modifications change the dynamic of how a room/s function.

Not only does an Energy Efficient home reduce energy bills, provide a cooler home in summer and a warmer home in winter, the greater picture is a reduction in greenhouse gas for a cleaner world.

A Zero star means the building does nothing to help with your comfort in warmer or cooler weather.

A 6-star rating is the minimum requirement for thermal performance, but it’s not exceptional.

In a perfect world, an owner of a 10-star home is highly unlikely to need any non-natural heating or cooling. No conditioning and heating, minimal energy costs – ideal.

FACT: It is no more expensive to build an Energy Efficient home; in fact, an energy friendly home will not only save you money but help the environment.

FACT: Well designed homes are now being built to 7 and 8-star or more.

FACT: A 6-star or higher home will SAVE you money and will contribute to reducing carbon emissions through less consumption of energy.
